How the beats are made

  1. Space first

    A beat is finished when there is room in it for a voice. Parts that compete with the vocal get muted, however good they sound alone.

  2. One idea per track

    Each beat is built around a single sound or rhythm. Everything else either supports it or goes.

  3. Low end decides

    The relationship between kick and bass is settled before anything else. If that works on small speakers, the rest follows.
